An insurance cover is designed to protect the financial well being of an individual, company or other entity in the case of unexpected loss. Buying an insurance policy and agreeing to its terms creates a contract between the insured and the insurer.

These contracts are legal and they are meant to protect a person or an organization from contingent risk of losses through financial means. However, a survey on the state of Kenya’s insurance sector revealed that there was widespread customer dissatisfaction in the industry.

We interviewed the chief executive officer of Association of Kenya Insurance; (AKI) Mr .Tom Gichuhi, who explained in details the important of insurance industry in Kenya economy. He also told us why everyone needs a cover; how and where one should get the right insurance policy.

Do I need an Insurance cover?
Yes, you definitely do. Everyone needs an insurance cover. Sometimes, its possible to avoid calamities, you may become ill or you may die of illness or an accident or your home or other property may be damaged or a theft may occur. In all these cases you will face the loss of income or your savings. This is where the insurance comes into financially protect you and your property in case such incidents occur.

This depends on the kind of cover you need. But as I said before, an insurance policy is necessity that is applicable to each and every one of us in one way or another. And whether you need life, health or auto insurance, it is vital to understand exactly what it is that you need before going out to shop for it.
What should I look for when choosing the right insurance company?
That is a good question. Now choosing the right insurance firm to insure your most valuable assets is important. It has taken you a lifetime to accumulate what you have and it only makes sense to insure those possessions from loss or damage. When choosing an insurance company, it’s important to distinguish between the insurance company, itself, and the insurance brokers. These are two different processes.
